5 Common Personnel Issues and How to Address Them

If you’re getting the sense that your personnel are unhappy, unmotivated, and unengaged, you’re not the only one. Surveys have consistently shown that, across the board, Americans are more miserable at work than at any other time on record.

This might seem odd to some employers. After all, why are there so many personnel issues when the job market is booming?

Why the reasons for workplace issues are always unique to the workplace in question, there are some tried and tested ways to overcome them. Here are some of the most common personnel issues, and how you can address them. 

1. Lack of Motivation

Employee motivation is oft-cited as one of the most pressing challenges employers face. When employees aren’t motivated, they aren’t happy, engaged, or productive.

To address this, you can beef up personal development initiatives, so that everyone knows the rewards on offer for working hard.

You can also bring in an expert to get everyone fired up. For example, these top business speakers frequently tour US workplaces to help give motivation a shot in the arm. 

2. Skill Gap

Even the most rigorous hiring processes cannot prevent skills gaps from emerging.

This is when employees do not know how to complete tasks expected of them to a high standard, which causes many different employee issues across the company.

To overcome this, you need to invest in training and engage every employee to find out what they are good at and where they stand to develop their skills further. Engagement is everything.

3. Weak Culture

This is one of the definitive modern workplace issues in the wake of the pandemic.

With everyone working remotely, bonds have frayed, and people report feeling disappointed at the lack of camaraderie, teamwork, and friendships at work. Forcing everyone back to their desks won’t work, and will likely make more people leave the company.

However, providing motivations for people to come together will work. Think freebies, office parties, group trips, and subsidies to help with commutes and lunch breaks. 

4. Poor Work-Life Balance

If people are working longer hours with no reward, they will be unmotivated, resentful, and constantly looking for the exit door. It’s up to you to provide concrete measures to prevent overwork and burnout.

Send positive messages and discourage people from communicating about work outside of office hours. If everyone is working late into the evening, you have an employee productivity problem that is entirely management’s problem to address. 

5. Poor Communication

Employees feel unmoored, unsure, and unmotivated when communication with management and HR is poor. You need to provide direction and let every employee know that they are seen and valued.

Always be transparent in your communication and make clear the reasoning behind any major company decisions.

Encourage feedback from across the workforce and ensure that are are reachable within reasonable limits. Communication is the key to a healthy, productive workplace. 

Address Personnel Issues Before They Arise  

Personnel issues are not unique to your organization, especially in these uncertain times. However, it is entirely up to you how you address them. By respecting your workforce and addressing their needs, you can keep everyone satisfied at work and performing well.
