Most envision one horrific appointment where the dentist extracts everything and gives you a set of dentures. It doesn’t happen like that.

Full mouth restoration treatments are mapped out over weeks (months). Each step has a purpose. Extraction may be one of those steps but it’s only one step in a larger process.

Here’s the problem:

Most people put off this treatment for years. And it’s rarely because of the expense. It’s because of fear. One national study showed that nearly 73% of adults fear the dentist, and that fear increases the longer you avoid treatment.

The good news? Understanding precisely what occurs at every phase eliminates most of that fear.

What you’ll walk away knowing:

  • What A Full Mouth Restoration Really Is
  • Where Tooth Extraction Fits Into The Plan
  • The Treatment Timeline, Step By Step
  • What Recovery Actually Feels Like

What Is A Full Mouth Restoration?

A full mouth restoration (or full mouth rehabilitation) replaces every tooth in your upper and lower jaw to restore the entire bite function.

Not one filling. Not one crown. The whole mouth.

It normally combines several treatments:

  • Tooth extraction for teeth that can’t be saved
  • Crowns, bridges and veneers
  • Dental implants or implant-supported dentures
  • Gum treatment and bone grafting

This isn’t cosmetic dentistry. This is reconstruction. Patients have often endured years of decay, periodontal disease, heavy bruxism or a traumatic injury. It’s actually more prevalent than you think — according to the CDC, 1 in 5 adults over age 75 have lost all of their natural teeth.

Step 1: The Assessment (Where Tooth Extraction Gets Decided)

Nothing gets pulled on day one. Nothing gets drilled either.

The first visit is information gathering. X-rays, 3D scans, photos, bite impressions and a gum check. Based on that, the dentist determines which teeth are healthy, which can be fixed and which must be pulled.

That’s when tooth extraction decisions are made – and they should never be decided by guessing. Anyone told that multiple teeth need extracting should have that treatment plan reviewed by the Best Dentist in Molar City first, because a quality tooth extraction plan always preserves whatever can realistically be saved. A tooth only comes out when the decay has reached the root, when gum disease has loosened it to the point there is no saving it, or when the tooth has cracked underneath the gum line.

The finished plan should clearly show:

  • How many teeth are being extracted
  • What is replacing each one
  • How long each phase takes
  • The full cost, broken down

Step 2: Tooth Extraction And Getting The Mouth Stable

This is the phase everybody dreads… and it’s usually the easiest one.

Tooth extraction is performed under local anaesthetic. Sedation is available if you are feeling nervous. Simple extractions only take a few minutes each. Surgical extractions (for broken or impacted teeth) take longer as your dentist will need to open your gum to access the root.

Here’s what most people don’t realise:

Tooth extraction isn’t as freaky as it sounds. From state-level CDC data, about one-third of adults between 18 and 64 have already had a permanent tooth lost to cavity or gum disease.

Your dentist will most likely pack the empty socket with bone graft material immediately following your extraction. This process, known as socket preservation, prevents your jawbone from caving in on itself as it heals. If left undone, you may not have enough bone density to support an implant in the future.

All current gum infections are treated during this stage as well. Trying to place new teeth on infected gums is pointless.

Step 3: The Healing Phase

Now comes the part nobody warns you about — waiting.

Bone takes time to regenerate after extraction. This is typically eight weeks to four months, depending on how many teeth were extracted and how much grafting was done.

Patients are not left toothless. Temporary dentures or a temporary bridge are placed so that chewing, talking and smiling can occur without any interruption. They are not permanent, but they preserve space and shield the healing sites.

Rate of healing can vary significantly from patient to patient. Smoking will greatly decrease your healing speed. So will poorly managed diabetes. Taking care to follow your aftercare directions will truly affect your end result.

Step 4: Rebuilding The Bite

After everything heals up, comes the rebuilding process. This phase takes the longest and occurs in stages.

Implants are inserted first. Titanium posts are put into your jaw where teeth were removed. They remain for several months to bond with your bone.

Damaged teeth are restored next. Teeth that pass inspection receive root canals, fillings, and either crowns or veneers depending on how much of the tooth is left.

Bridges and dentures are last. Bridges or implant-supported dentures that snap securely into place fill any remaining gaps.

During all of this, the dentist continues to measure one thing more than any other: how the upper teeth fit against the lower teeth. Mess up the bite and patients suffer from jaw pain, headaches and fractured restorations after one year.

Step 5: The Final Fit

The last appointments are about detail.

Permanent crowns are cemented onto the implants, tooth colour and shape are designed to complement your face, and your bite is meticulously adjusted, millimetre by millimetre. You will bite down repeatedly on coloured paper while small amounts of tooth are ground away from the high spots.

It’s finicky. It’s the difference between a restoration that lasts two decades versus one that cracks in three.

Photos are also taken at this appointment. The “AHA!” moment between before and after photos is usually when patients realize the wait was worth it.

What Recovery Actually Feels Like

Here’s the straight version.

Post-operative recovery from tooth extraction includes swelling, tenderness and a liquid diet. Patients commonly report it as being irritating rather than painful, and prescription painkillers manage it easily for the initial 24 hours.

Recovery goes much smoother when you:

  • Stick to soft, lukewarm foods for the first week
  • Avoid straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing
  • Take every antibiotic exactly as prescribed
  • Attend every single follow-up appointment

The remaking stages are much easier. Crown impressions and denture adjustments seldom cause discomfort beyond a jaw ache from holding your mouth open.

Bringing It All Together

Complete mouth reconstruction is not one procedure. It’s a series of steps: evaluation, extraction, healing, restoration, then bite adjustment.

The entire process usually lasts from six months to one and a half years. The duration depends almost completely on how much healing your jaw has to do in between steps.

To quickly recap:

  • Get a full assessment before anyone touches a tooth
  • Understand exactly why each tooth is being extracted
  • Expect a genuine healing gap in the middle
  • Protect the result with proper aftercare

Waiting never seems to make any of this easier. Teeth you could have gotten filled this year often have to be pulled next year. Waiting turns a minor treatment plan into a major one.
