Looking online can help, but there are so many ideas, that people overlook the most notable attractions. With a strong itinerary, you can stroll the streets and try the best gelato in the world. Whether you’re visiting for work, family, or fun, Florence has plenty to keep you busy and has excellent public transportation.

If you want to discover the best things to see in Florence, keep reading below!

Accademia Gallery

If you’re ready to take an emotional and breathtaking tour, the Accademia Gallery is recommended.

From the moment you enter the museum, you’ll see sculptures lined down the halls as you approach The David. Although many of the museum’s art was originally outdoors, they were brought inside to help preserve the original pieces.

The dome ceiling enhances the experience and helps display just how large The David is. If you plan to visit Florence during tourist season, you should expect long lines and busy rooms. Fortunately, guests are kind and you can still take the time to absorb the beauty and messages found within each painting and sculpture.

Some people visit the gallery for spiritual reasons, as Jesus and the disciples are portrayed throughout the gallery. Your trip to Italy will be a bust without stopping here, don’t forget to reserve a spot!

Giotto’s Bell Tower

To get some of the most impressive views of Florence, you need to climb Giotto’s Bell Tower.

This bell tower has more than 400 steps going up to the top, but the effort will be worth it. From the top, you can see the dome of the cathedral and all of the people walking around gazing at it. The walk takes about 30 minutes, so be sure to pack comfortable and supportive shoes.

If you’re visiting the tower or other parts of the Duomo Complex, there is a dress code to be aware of. Keep your shoulders, chest, and knees covered so you aren’t denied access at the door. Aside from the beautiful views of the interior and exterior of the dome, there’s also plenty of architecture and history to discover.

San Lorenzo Market

If you want to embrace Italian culture, San Lorenzo Market is the place to be.

At the market, you can find authentic foods, clothing, and plenty of leather. The area is known for its leather production, so there’s never a shortage of purses, jackets, pants, and bags. If you’re not impressed with the prices, don’t be afraid to try and bargain.

Since San Lorenzo Market is mainly outdoors, it’s had a history of causing a mess while shopping. Luckily, an indoor area was built in 2014, but it doesn’t modernize the area too much.

Pitti Palace

There are endless galleries to explore in Italy, and Pitti Palace is one of the most desirable destinations.

Since 1550, Pitti Palace has been attracting eyes, artists, and architecture enthusiasts. It’ll take two to three hours to enjoy the Palazzo Pitti tour, their peak season lasts from May to September but can extend longer when they’re busy.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to view the art and architecture, some people can spend hours in one section. After you visit the palace, you can get a free tour Florence.

Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore

It’s hard to imagine the world being so old, but when you travel to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, you can walk through 1434.

This beautiful cathedral is the fourth largest church in the world, so just its size makes for an unforgettable view. Whether you go inside or not, this is a breathtaking building with detail in every corner. The Italian Gothic styles are timeless and welcoming.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is free to enter, especially since it’s a church. However, if you’re hoping to climb to the top of the Cupola, you’ll have to get a ticket. This is worth the cost, or you could also consider touring each monument in the complex.

Ponte Vecchio

You can go on a true Italian vacation when you visit Ponte Vecchio.

Ponte Vecchio means “old bridge” in Italian. It was the first segmented, arched bridge in the west, crossing the Arno River. There’s a medieval street stretching over the river, with shops and jewelers selling their goods in booths.

This is one of the most romantic scenes in Tuscany and there are secrets to explore. If you find the entrance, you can take a secret passage from the bridge to the town hall. Many people come here for honeymoons and other romantic getaways.

What makes Ponte Vecchio so famous is the impressive engineering, especially for the time it was built. During Europe’s Middle Ages, Taddeo Gaddi built a bridge and legacy.

Piazzale Michelangelo

Have you ever seen iconic panorama photos of Florence?

Piazzale Michelangelo is located in the center of everything, and there are several buildings to explore. Sculptures are located around all of the buildings and land, so you don’t want to rush your way through.

If you’re hoping to pack your trip to Italy with art and history, you must stop here. The museum offers tours, or you can walk the grounds at your own pace. Unlike many other Florence attractions, there’s parking space, free entry, and shopping kiosks.

Since Piazzale Michelangelo is in the town square, you can easily walk without getting a taxi.

Don’t Walk Past the Best Things to See in Florence

Florence is known for its rich art, history, and delicious food, which is why it draws in such a crowd.

Overlooking the best things to see in Florence could lead to vacation regrets and missed memories. If you want to make the most of your Italian vacation, you can absorb the culture in these locations. While you’re in Florence, you could fall in love, if not with another person, with architecture and history.
